Earlier this month screenshots of the browser were leaked and support documentation for the preview landed online. Now, HTNovo has discovered an installer download that is now widely available to everyone. Clicking the link leads the user to the install of the “MicrosoftEdgeSetup.exe”. While it seems like the installer works, once it is initiated the file actually fails. The report points out the installer is also only available for Azure Premium users. We know a public preview for Chromium Edge is coming soon. The most likely launch for the new browser is alongside the Windows 10 April 2019 Update, which will be launched by Microsoft next month.
Development
Microsoft has also been stocking the browser with Chrome extensions. In fact, the company already has 82 Addons prepared for the preview build. However, we expect that number will increase as in theory the browser can support any Chrome Extension. Back in December, Microsoft announced it will abandon its EdgeHTML web rendering technology and move its Edge browser to Google’s Chromium technology. The idea is to give Edge more access to apps through web apps to better compete with Chrome. “Today we’re announcing that we intend to adopt the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility for our customers and less fragmentation of the web for all web developers,” said Microsoft CVP Joe Belfiore said at the time.
